Fertilizer and Chemical Burns
Cemetery grounds crews drop heavy fertilizer to keep the turf green. Those granules contain iron and salts. When they land on porous granite or bronze, they burn the surface.
You see rusty orange spots and thick white salty rings. You cannot wash fertilizer salts out with water. We apply specialized chemical neutralizers. The paste pulls the iron and salts straight out of the rock pores. It stops the chemical reaction and clears the stain.
Mower Deck Damage
In the memorial parks, flat markers settle into the soft dirt. Once a marker sits below the grass line, commercial mower decks drag right over the top.

The spinning blades chip the granite edges. The mower tires grind melted black rubber into the carved names. We clean the rubber out with a solvent. We pry the heavy slab out of the mud. We lay a thick gravel bed and reset the stone flush with the cut grass. The mower clears it safely.
Clay Soil and Frost Heave
The ground near the Clinton River is heavy clay. It holds water. When January hits, that wet ground freezes solid. The expanding ice pushes 500-pound monuments up and twists them sideways.
When the ground thaws, the stone drops back down crooked. Pushing the monument upright does nothing. For proper leaning headstone repair, we dig the base completely out of the clay. We fill the hole with crushed angular stone. The gravel drains the water. The frost cannot grab the foundation.
Road Film from M-59
The Hall Road (M-59) and Van Dyke corridors stay packed with traffic. That exhaust drops right onto the cemeteries. It forms a greasy, dark paste on the headstones.
Rain smears the grease but does not wash it off. We spray a commercial degreaser. The chemicals melt the road oil. We rinse the gray sludge away, exposing the bare stone underneath.
Clinton River Humidity
The river winds right through the city. It keeps the ground water high and the air damp. Shaded areas grow thick green slime and black mildew on the granite.
We do not scrub the slime. Scrubbing spreads the spores. We soak the stone with a heavy biocide. The chemicals kill the roots. The dead algae dries up and washes off naturally in the rain.
Bronze Oxidation
Parks like Cadillac Memorial Gardens use thousands of bronze markers. The humidity and lawn chemicals eat the factory clear coat. The metal turns into a chalky green crust.
We do full bronze marker restoration right at the grave. We strip the bronze down to bare copper and tin. We scrub the green rot off. We spray a dark background and sand the letters. Finally, we spray a new clear coat to seal the metal.
Hard Water Deposits
Irrigation systems run constantly during the summer. The well water leaves calcium behind. It builds a white, cloudy scale on the markers.
You cannot scrape it off without scratching the bronze or stone. We spray a buffered acid. It eats the calcium scale safely so we can rinse it clear.
